I'm Dr. Rana Mafee, a double board-certified neurologist, integrative and functional medicine physician, and the host of The Gutsy Brain MD.
After years of practicing conventional neurology, I came to appreciate both the incredible strengths—and the important limitations—of modern medicine. We excel at crisis care, but when it comes to preventing and reversing many chronic diseases, we often overlook the powerful role of nutrition, lifestyle, the microbiome, and the interconnectedness of the body's systems.
My own health journey reinforced what I was seeing in my patients. After navigating autoimmune disease, chronic digestive issues, and a rare cancer diagnosis, I experienced firsthand how profoundly gut health can influence the brain, immune system, metabolism, and overall well-being. That experience deepened my commitment to looking beyond symptoms and asking why illness develops in the first place.
Through this podcast, I translate emerging science on the gut-brain axis, microbiome, nutrition, lifestyle medicine, and functional medicine into practical, evidence-based conversations that empower you to take control of your health. Whether you're a patient, healthcare professional, or simply curious about the latest research, my goal is to challenge outdated medical silos, connect the dots across disciplines, and explore what becomes possible when we stop treating the gut and brain as separate systems.
Because when we understand the whole person—not just the diagnosis—we open the door to a different kind of medicine.
I believe the future of medicine is personalized, preventive, and rooted in understanding the body as an interconnected system. If we want to change the trajectory of chronic disease, we have to start asking better questions—and that's exactly what this podcast is about.
